Mom left after a little less than an hour, and Corinne and I settled down in the air conditioned bedroom. She kept the blinds open so we would know if someone pulled into the driveway. She was thinking "police", I was thinking, "anybody."
An hour later, the phone rang, and Corinne sat up so quickly you could hear the vaccuum pop behind her. Ever heard of the "Picard maneuver," from Star Trek? That was Corinne. Warp factor 9 to travel 3 feet, making her appear to be in two places at once.
I answered the phone, and it was Shane.
As soon as I said, "Hi Shane! We've been worri..." Corinne started crying and ripped the phone out of my hands. :-) She cried on the phone with him for a few minutes, and then told him to talk to me again.
He wasn't injured or dead! That's good. He'd been in jail all night! That's bad.
Even though the court released him with a promise to appear in September, it turned out that he had missed another traffic-related hearing at a different court back in early July. They'd issued a warrant for his arrest, and so when he was done with the first arraignment he had to sit in jail all night so that he could go to another one first thing Friday morning.
He was in fact calling from another courthouse, up in Danielson, CT. Besides letting us know that he was alive and unharmed, he needed a ride so that he could work with my Dad for the weekend in NH.
