I saw that story too. It reinforces what I've long believed about Vignette. There are a handful of sites on the planet that need that kind of horsepower -- and at that scale, customizing Vignette is unbelievably costly. OTOH once you've bitten the bullet, the results can be good. I *do* know several satisfied Vignette customers.

However, most sites run on a smaller scale. I have successfully used homegrown CMS's for years, based on nothing fancier than Perl, XML, and consistent habits of data management. There's definitely a market for lighter-weight implementations of what Vignette does. Zope, for example, sees a big opportunity there. One of its big strengths is delegation of authority down a tree of objects. Frontier/Manila now does a very nice job of basic news-oriented publication workflow. I don't know much about Conversant yet, but I've seen enough to suggest that it's a capable toolkit for custom CMS and workflow. Every CMS/workflow situation is different, so there's a huge need for customized solutions. That means opportunities in this space for everybody: Zope, Manila, Conversant, and players yet to be named.

Manila is nice, but it needs a strong feature set. I think it is in the same class as Blogger at the
