My theory is that when AOL's servers connect to ours, they see a mismatch between the MX record (i.e. email.wc.cc.va.us) and the domain that the machine announces itself to be when the SMTP connection starts (i.e. email.wcc.vccs.edu). Our sys admin thinks that the the problem might be the mismatch between the domain of the addressee (wcc.vccs.edu) and the domain of the MX record (wc.cc.va.us). We really just need a reliable error report to start focusing on which it might be (hence my request).
It seems to be intermittent however since I have recently received e-mail to both addresses. That said, we also get another weird error sending to ntelos.net addresses which is a rejection because the wcc.vccs.edu domain doesn't exist - again, I wonder if that's because the MX record for our mail server is wc.cc.va.us.
More details than you care for I suspect, but it might help.
David
