Frankly, I think the market for computer software is a lot like the market for electricity -- it ain't great and occasionally prone to blackouts, but it's just good enough to forestall actually doing something about it.
I am surprised by the people I know who are technically astute but actually prefer to run Outlook over other clients. I suspect, as you mention, computers are so complex that people are unwilling to switch from what they know, and unfortunately many people start out with Outlook as their first e-mail client (on the other hand, Eudora was the first client I used and so I thought Outlook really sucked when it first came out because it was different from Eudora -- guess I should be glad I adopted a losing e-mail platform!)
