You got me completely wrong, Seth! Where did I say that it was a good thing?! And how can you think that I could just want to argue with you?! :)
I'm just saying that most users are dumb and are most likely to remain so: they won't do the effort to learn because when they make a row of spaces or dots, they're satisfied with the result and they don't give a shi... er, they don't care about the poor guy that will have to clean up their mess (if they even think about it).
Each time I have to deal with that kind of user, I sense that they feel like they were forced to use the software, so the less they do in it, the better they feel. And when you try to explain something to them, they just close their ears and stare at you until you're done, and then they finally say something like "that sounds interesting, but I prefer my way".

I guess that 80% of people use hardly more than 20% of the features in each software they own, so most features are for the remaining 20%, who use their software at 80% or more (am I a little pessimistic?).
