I agree completely. "Hussein is a really bad guy" plus "the US needs a strategic foothold in the middle east, to take the war to the terrorists" would not have worked. The WMD issue had a much better chance of success, but unfortunately it was a big exaggeration (at best), and the UN's inspectors basically said as much.
