I was told it was impossible (or nearly so) to install the generic genome browser (gbrowse) on Mac OS X, from source. Too many dependencies, and the Mac's unix underpinnings were too "non-standard."
Hah! It required a lot of patience, and a friend who could offer some good pointers and listen to a lot of venting (thanks Brian), but it's done. GBrowse 1.54 is running happily on my desktop, and I even used the chaos that is Fink for most of the dependencies.
A patch patch here, and a patch patch there, here a patch, there a patch, everywhere a patch patch...
This feels good, I really accomplished something today. :-)
