I rode year round (and still ride in the wintertime) in Boston, MA. So it gets darn cold, it snows, it sleets, and there's freezing rain. In the winter I'd ride a cyclocross bike with somewhat wider tires with knobby tread. In the early mornings in January the temps were usually in the teens.

You're certainly right about PI prices -- not cheep! The stuff I've gotten from them, though, has been completely indestructible. The jacket I was talking about is now six years old and still looks great. I agree. Booties, yuh. Bad name.

Oh, and for more in-depth info, including lots of cool DIY tips on adapting less expensive non-bike-specific stuff for winter riding, try out the IceBike site and mailing list: http://www.icebike.org/
