My point wasn't to criticize the advice of rebooting every so often (rebooting seems to me to free up more memory than logging out), but just to make clear that one doesn't have to be logged out to run systemwide cron tasks, even under 10.2 or 10.3. It'd be a shame if people felt unnecessarily obligated to let their machines recuperate in their least useful state, staring at loginwindow.
