It's a question of scalability. The indexing bots are going to access a site like a horde of fast-clicking users. This, of course, generates a lot of activity.

Here's a question, why isn't the rest of the net complaining about Google's indexing behavior?

Is it because they "don't know" or because it's not a problem? Most likely the latter.

I suspect this is a simple problem of scalabilty (or lack thereof). The ETP (and other Manila) sites are running on hardware/links that can't support the kind of processing needed. The nature of existing Frontier solutions don't appear to support any kind of real clustering or load balancing.
