“Shivers (Simon Brand)”

Years ago (1993/1994) I lived in Vermont, and started an excellent friendship with a guy from England named Simon Brand.

In 1994, Simon returned to England, and committed suicide.

I'll do my best to tell his story someday soon. First, though, I have to point out that Simon was a bit famous as a Punk Rocker. Not really famous (how many of them were?), but well known by the people that like Punk Rock.

For the first time, I've finally found some information about Simon and his music online - just a little - and it sent a huge shiver down my spine. All the tragedy and sorrow surrounding his memory came swarming back with it, but along with that came a big smile. (Simon's face is the one on the right of the CD case, in the picture on that page.)

Simon was just one cool guy, and when he wasn't wallowing in his depression he could disarm anybody - and I do mean anybody - with one of the quickest wits and oddest senses of humor I've ever known.

Telling this story will involve another family in VT, my friend Darren, my Grandfather, and Simon's wife Wendy and his two kids.

Someday. Soon. It won't be easy, but I've been promising this to myself and his family and friends and memory for years.

I haven't forgotten, Simon. I promise.
