Fixture: The Next Best Thing

You glimpse it just around the corner. You hear it's rumble, barely, before it comes over the hill. It's the next programming paradigm, the next shift in the industry, the next best way to "get things done." This new way is sure to make us more productive, make our software more usable and more powerful, and make all of us more money.

It's the next best thing. (Which is always better than the current or previous best thing!)

"Accept the New Way, and prosper! Reject it, and be banished into the purgatory of ignominy and failure."

And the kicker is, the next best thing is always there, just over the hill or around the corner. No matter how many new things you learn, how many paradigms are shifted, how many times the industry is turned on its head, there will always be a new, next best thing.

This sounds like sarcasm, but sadly it is not. In many ways, this is all true.

Our industry is so young! Everything is still new to us, and we still have so much to learn. (When any of us stop learning, it's time to find a new career.)
