Ride #119: Frozen cyclist, -- AND 5000 miles! --

I haven't been moving my cycling stats into my database for the last couple of months. I'm back-filling it all now, to find out what my mileage looks like. I've only ridden twice in December: once on the first, and again on this past Saturday. Might go out again today. Short rides now, just 25 miles or less.

I need an egg warmer, my head was really cold on Saturday. If I ride today, I'm going to pick up an under-the-helmet hood to keep the wind off my noggin. Should wear three pair of socks, too. Wearing only two on Saturday was a mistake, I thought my toes were going to fall off.

Update: now that I've caught up on all of my stats, I see this ride put me over 5,000 miles for the year! That's my third and final goal for the year (lowest weight since I started tracking it a few years ago, 100+ rides, and 5000+ miles).

Stats: 25.06 miles (40.34 km) in 1h 18' 46" for an average speed of 19.08 mph (30.73 kph).

RE: Ride #??: Frozen cyclist.

What was the temp when you rode?
Have you tried those neoprene booties? They stop the wind, which helps a
lot. I have a PI balaclava that is outstanding in cold weather.

I rode yesterday, but it was hard starting out after riding in mid-seventies
in Tucson a couple weeks ago.

I need to buy some, I know. They'd make a big difference. A heavier riding jacket would help, too. I'm really not equipped for winter riding.

RE: Ride #??: Frozen cyclist.

Perfect. My leg was 66 miles. With two stops, we did it in 05:02 for ave.
13.3. But riding time was 04:30 and ave. 15.3. There were 4,800 riders.
It was much like the PMC with well-wishers along the way, bikers to chat
with, etc. The food had no comparison to the PMC, though.

The PMC's food doesn't compare to the PMC's food. Sound odd? As you get more used to the event, you find that the food isn't as super-fantastic as it seems the first couple of years.

Is there any way to say that without it sounding like a complaint? It's not a complaint. I like the food at the PMC, and I love the volunteers who cook it for the tired riders. I've just noticed that every year it seems a little less like I'm actually eating at Legal Seafoods, and more like I'm eating good cookout food at what feels like the world's busiest cookout.

RE: Ride #??: Frozen cyclist.

The Tour de Tucson's food could not hold a candle to the PMC food. All we
got at the finish was bagels and $4.75 beer (which we passed up). And I
misspoke about the number of riders. There were 7,800, not 4,800.

My 05:02 time was the official results. We all had a transponder strapped
to our ankles that automatically recorded the times we crossed the start and
finish lines.

Floyd Landes rode the 109-mile race. He came in 5th. I never saw him.

5,000 Miles, 119 Rides (so far)

Saturday's ride put me at 5,009 miles. Yes!!

I'm riding again today, and will pick up the egg warmer. If I have some money later in the week I'll get some sort of wind-shell for my feet, too. (I hate saying "booties." That's just wrong. Booties and tights!?)

Congratulations.

5,000 miles is quite an accomplishment. I'm not sure I'm going to catch
you, but I've definately got you beat with more hours in the saddle ;-)

I believe you've done 5,000 miles every year for quite awhile now. Right?

Four days ago you said that you only need 130 miles. Five or six rides, right? By now you're probably down to 100 or 110 miles, and you still have 11 days left this month. No problem. (That doesn't mean you'll catch me, since I'm still riding, but you should hit your mark.)

And I think most of those 'extra hours' you put in were all on October 27th, when we rode our last (for this year) century "together". ;-)

Nah, I haven't been riding 5000 miles each year. I used to, but for the
last several years I've done in the neighborhood of 4500+ or -. This was a
good year though, and I should hit 5,000 miles soon (less than 100 to go).
I sure wish I road a few more times in September so that I would have hit my
goal sooner because the riding now is pretty tough (I fell on Saturday after
my front wheel washed out on some ice). Nothing serious, except for a
bruised ego as it happened right in front of some of the neighborhood kids
who previously thought I was pretty cool...

I kept waiting for you to post a ride report, or at least the photos I sent
you. You always capture your rides so well in your write-ups so I was
disappointed when it never materialized... Maybe some snowy winter day
you'll surprise me?

I'm sorry!! You're right, I should have written about it ages ago. Funny thing is, I do remember writing about that ride, from beginning to end. I wonder if I wrote it but never posted it, or just dreamed it all.

Maybe one day soon...

Congrats on the 5000 miles! That's quite an accomplishment. One of these years, I'm going to break 1000, myself. ;)

Hmm, I'm not sure if I'll have time to do both! Actually, I've been posting with a little more frequency, but it's been to my programming blog. That's where all my spare thoughts have been lately. Actually, that's not true... I do have some news to post. I'll get to it. :)

For everybody else's reference, I believe Levi is referring to "Levi's Lisp Blog".

NICE! Well done. I'm a little late in catching up with some posts I had in "Draft", so I hope you'll forgive the tardy kudos.

What's your goal for next year?
