The Weekend

The one thing about this weekend that sticks out more than anything else: the weather.

Saturday

Saturday was unbearably hot and humid, all day long. I was stuck in my office working on my class for Sunday morning, without my airconditioner. When it finally got bad enough that I couldn't take it any more, I installed a really old, junkie AC in one of the windows. It wasn't great, and it rattles like a freight train, but it dropped the temperature by ten degrees and that made a huge difference.

There's no way I was going to bike in that weather, but Saturday morning I did take the bike over to Mystic Cycle Center to have them either repair the broken spoke or replace the wheel. Rick did both, and he was very nice about it: he didn't charge for the repair, he gave me a big discount on the wheel, and he gave me a 'stock' tandem/touring-style wheel from a Trek, instead of building one from scratch. Building it would have forced me to wait a week for the parts to come in (during which time I'd probably have broken another spoke), and it would have cost $20 more.

Rick worried about how heavy this wheel is - it's at least a pound heavier than the old one - but I reminded him that a pound or two doesn't make any difference to someone my size. After all, my own weight varies by at least that much on a day to day basis (though it's trend has been to go down, thankfully).

I also found out that Rick owns the place! That's good. Eventually, maybe this Fall or Winter, I'd like to talk to him about trading a really nice web site, professionally and actively managed (in Conversant, of course), for a decent discount at the store. We'll see how it goes. If he's not inclined, then I'll talk him into a race to make the decision, where I pick the course. We'll start at the top of that hill where I hit 48 MPH, and the race will be just one mile. ;-)

Sunday

Sunday was just as hot as Saturday, so again I didn't ride.

Meeting was like "the attack of the Dillinghams" (and extended family). My Mom's the organist, I was the reader/server, my Grandfather exhorted (he cried, of course - always does, he can't help it), and my uncle Gary Schlageter was the presider. Jed gives the announcements, since he's the ecclesia's recording secretary. Pretty weird the way it all worked out!

My Adult Sunday School class went quite well, better than I expected for a topic that I've never spoken on (the Atonement). This first class was just on terminology, and I warned them that it would be boring, but it wasn't! Most everybody seemed to enjoy it, and there was lots of discussion. (Also, most of the ecclesia is down at the Shippensburg Bible School, but since there were no kids all of the Sunday School teachers (that were still here) were in the Adult class, so the class size was about average.)

I drove Corinne home so she could have lunch with her sister (who's here for a week vacation), and I went over to Mom and Dad's for Lasagna. Mmmmm! It was as good as she's ever made it, which is pretty darn good (she uses Linguica sausage, and I don't think anybody else makes it that way). Shane, Art, Sarah, and Jed were all there, too.

I don't remember much after that, frankly. It was just too stinking hot, and I don't think I did anything productive except play Joggle, an online version of Boggle that I've grown addicted to. (The good thing about Joggle is that you can play any time, so it's a good way to clear your head for a few minutes.) If anybody wants to sign up and challenge me, my username is Dillingham (how original, huh?).
