LetterRip Changes Hands

LetterRip Pro is the mailing list server that I've used at Macrobyte for years. It's a great piece of software, my only complaint about it is the very limited interface that it exposes for external scripting. We use LetterRip along side Conversant to provide mailing list features to some Conversant sites, but that limited 'scripting interface' in LR has forced us to set up new lists for new sites manually.

Fog City Software hasn't updated LetterRip in years, a fact which has never ceased to annoy me.

Yesterday, they announced that LetterRip has been acquired by LetterRip Software, a new company which includes one former Fog City Software employee who helped develop LetterRip Pro and Claris Email.

They're working on a MacOS X version of the server, and are going to implement "a list of new features." (How many features are in "a list"?)

I wish them luck. OSX is apparently a good server platform, and I really do like LetterRip. If they finish the scripting interface, Macrobyte will remain a loyal customer.

Incidentally, this apparently leaves Fog City with... nothing. They developed Emailer for Apple/Claris years ago, but it's been long since shelved. LetterRip is now with LetterRip Software. I wonder if there will still be a Fog City Software six months from now.

Racial Profiling

I'm listening to an NPR story about the Secret Service agent -- of Arab descent -- who was removed from an American Airlines flight when the pilot didn't believe that he was an agent.

Remember back when "racial profiling" used to refer primarily to police giving more tickets to "black" drivers than to "white" drivers?

Sheesh.

At least the agent can take comfort in his boss's words. If the problem turns out to actually be one of racial profiling, he's promised to be "mad as heck".

Stories of daisy-cutters being dropped on American Airlines headquarters are, so far, uncomfirmed.

Headed for Baltimore

Corinne and I are going to Baltimore for a long weekend, Friday morning.

First cat show of the new year (though not of the show season, which only has a few months left), and we have a kitten that we think is going to kick some furry butt. Wish us luck. :-)

This will be my first "hotel show" (the show is actually in the hotel where we're staying), which I hope will make it incredibly relaxing. Translation: I can sleep during the day if I want to.

The show ends on Sunday afternoon, but we're not coming home until Monday afternoon so that we can enjoy a bit of Baltimore. Specifically, Phillips on the waterfront. MMMMMmmmmm...

Shane will be caring for the parrots and the rest of the cats while we're gone (we'll have Wixie, Xodus, and Ysabel with us), and generally watching the house. (Reference to fox and hen house deleted.)
