Net Tools Updates: EIMS, LetterRip, Transmit

The EIMS admin tool for OS X was updated a few days ago to 3.1.1a1. The previous alpha version crashed when you tried to quit if you were still connected to a mail server. This version doesn't do that.

EIMS is now being maintained by Glenn Anderson, the guy who originally wrote it for Apple (then it was called AIMS). I hope he decides to create a native OSX version (Carbon or Cocoa, I don't care). He's on his own, I wish him luck.

As for LetterRip... nothing. They haven't even updated their web page since the day they set it up. They are working on a native OS X version, which is good, but they need to learn how to pander to the information junkies like me who want constant updates on their progress. :-) Seriously, LetterRip Pro 3 is very long in the tooth, and if they don't come out with a new version soon I'm going to have to dump it in favor of MajorDomo on OS X.

Finally, there's Transmit, my absolute number one all time favorite FTP client. They've released a beta version for OS X. I wrote to them to ask if I could beta test, and they wrote back to tell me I could test it... because it's already available on the download Transmit page. Not sure how I missed it! Duh.

ACK ACK

Two of the subscribers on the Script Meridian Community list receive their mail through a military mail server. Every time that mail server receives a message, it sends an acknowledgement back to the server that sent it, in a separate message, like this:

Your message entitled:

RE: [SM] SM Design Revision [Msg#16125]

has been accepted for delivery and will be forwarded to the recipients mailbox.

Details of the recipient(s):
[address 1]
[address 2]

The list server treats this as a bounce notice, and includes it in a digest of bounce notices which are sent to me whenever the digest reaches a certain size.

Who's brilliant ideas was that!? Why on earth is that stupid server sending acks for every message? Is this some military thing like, "You're not sending secret military information, and your email address doesn't belong to a known terrorist, so I'm going to deliver your message now"?

I wouldn't mention this except for the fact that managing a list with stale addresses is enough of a hassle without junk ACKs coming back from valid addresses. Bad server. Bad.
