Gaffe alert. Don't submit messages to public lists that are written in internal Macrobyte shorthand. This always causes trouble.
Oops.
Dave Winer posted a link to Shane McChesney's story about taking a day off last week, and why he did it.
While driving around Southern Ontario with his wife on that very rare day off, he bought a book called Working Ourselves to Death. It's worth reading (the story... I don't know about the book).
When you're done, follow the link to the Workaholic's online test.
The story set me up, but the test hit me right between the eyes.
I answered "yes" to every single one of those questions. Corinne agreed with me.
For most of the last two weeks, I've worked from 8 AM to 10:30 PM... or Midnight... or even 3:00 AM. Something needs to give.
It's not like working these hours has made me rich or fabulously successful. I do love my work, that's true, and there's a lot of satisfaction from "doing what you love," but I never never never wanted to live to work. I know better. I've always known better, but sometimes I forget.
I'll change. Just have to finish up a few projects, first...
UserLand released Froniter 8.0.5 tonight. Perhpas the most important change, to me, is string.multipleReplaceAll(). It's incremental, but we'll be able to use it for some performance enhancements in Macrobyte's software.
No, there was no version 8. Or 8.0.1 through 8.0.4. They're trying to keep in step with Radio, so they just skipped them. (It's not the first time.)
Dave Winer needs a vacation as badly as I do. I hope he takes this opportunity to take a holiday. That's not a "groupie comment," that's a comment from someone who's developed a decent working relationship with him. It's from someone who can see when a guy needs to take a little break.
