Building Traffic

Brian Carnell writes about building web traffic:

Frazier focuses on what drives traffic to weblog sites, especially how links from well-trafficked site translate into increased traffic on smaller, lesser known sites.

...

I wrote several articles on this site with the hope that Reynolds specifically would link to them (which he did). My advice -- it makes sense to do so if your weblog is getting low traffic (under 1,000 page views a day), but once you're getting decent traffic, it's probably not worth it. There's still nothing that beats having your web site show up in the first ten results of a Google search.

I completely agree that the long-term benefits of being a popular search-engine result is much better than the temporary boost you get from a link on a more popular site. However, keep in mind that a link from a popular site actually raises your status on Google (and any of their licensees like Yahoo and Netscape).

Also, if your site is "general interest" (like this one, and Brian's) then you never know what the search engines are going to do. The most popular search words that send people here to TruerWords is "miss kim lilacs". A couple years ago I posted some pictures of my lilacs, and ever since then it's been one of my most popular pages. I've posted hundreds of entries on cycling, performance drugs, content management, and knowledge management... but the page that gets all the hits just has pictures of lilacs.

Ask and Ye Shall Receive: SkyPilot Theme for Mozilla 1.0

Wow. A while back I complained that the SkyPilot theme -- my favorite -- hadn't been ported to newer versions of Mozilla due to the constant changes in Mozilla's implementation of themes and XUL.

Today "sailfish" reported -- right here on TruerWords -- that a new 1.0-compatible version of SkyPilot is available. (Sailfish is the guy that ported it to 1.0, so I really appreciate the fact that he reported it here.)

I love it. This theme is part of what hooked me on Mozilla in the first place.

(Note: if you're using a recent build of Mozilla and it doesn't tell you to restart after installing a new theme, do it anyway. They haven't worked the kinks out of it yet, and lots of stuff won't work correctly until you restart it.)
